Press Release: 15th August 2007
Private view: 6th September: 18.00 21.00
Public view: 7th 13th September: 12.00 19.00
Unlike most postgraduate degree shows, SPAM is an independently and professionally curated exhibition. The majority of the sixteen exhibitors (who hail from
eleven countries) are professional artists; the curator is Elizabeth Upper (MA Courtauld Institute, 2005).
The range of media on show includes photographs, book art, mixed media work and video. Many pieces manipulate London and its inhabitants, including the photographers
themselves, into starting points for the exploration and transgression of traditional genres.
The venue, the basement of Shoreditch Town Hall, reinforces the uniqueness and internationalism of the show. The exposed bricks and architectural
features exempt the works from the stark white gallery setting typical in London.
Course Leader Dr David Bate says, "When you reverse the title initials of this course, MA Photographic Studies, it reads S-P-A-M. This reversal of the title
to 'SPAM' is not only a linguistic joke, it also says something important about the image-works of these photographers: their work is the opposite of SPAM.
As always, the work from this course is diverse, led by the passions of students, but it is powered by their common experience of thinking about what photography can do."
The private view is on September 6th from 18.00 to 21.00. The show then runs daily from Sept 7th to 13th from 12.00 to 19.00 at Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street, London, EC1V 9LT. Entry is free.
